You may be surprised to know that not all fat is bad for you, some fats actually do have real nutritional benefits.
Fats are an essential part of our everyday diets, they are a source of energy and form many important components and structures in the body.
What is important is the amount and type of fat which you eat:
Saturated Fat
These are found in fatty meats, butter, cheese and cream. High intakes of saturated fat are linked to raised blood cholesterol levels and poor heart health. The Food Standards Agency recommends that we reduce the amount of saturated fat in our diets. That's why weve reduced the amount of saturated fat in our Chip Shop range by 40% on 2006 so it now contains 'less than 5% saturated fat'.
Polyunsaturated Fat
An unsaturated fat, these are found in oily fish, certain plant oils eg: Sunflower oil as well as some nuts and seeds.
Monounsaturated Fat
An unsaturated fat, these are found in Olive oil, Rapeseed oil, Avocados and some nuts.
Polyunsaturated (and to a lesser extent Monounsaturated fats) have been proven to help lower cholesterol levels, and hence help to maintain heart health. |
