Over 200 Years of Seafood Heritage 2000-2008

2000-2008
Young’s continues to flourish in the 21st century.

In July 1999, Young’s merged with own label specialist, Bluecrest Seafood - firmly establishing the new Young’s Bluecrest business as one of Europe’s leading specialist seafood companies.

Soon after the merger, in November 2000, the Young’s brand was re-launched with new products, improved packaging, and a £5m advertising campaign, encouraging everyone to ‘Make fish the dish of the day!’ This highly successful approach helped grow sales rapidly - Young’s brand value increasing from just over £90M in 2000 to over £215M by the time it celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2005.

A number of acquisitions also expanded the business - including Albert Fisher in June 2002 and the Pinegain Group in October 2003. In 2004, Young’s acquired The Macrae Food Group, a specialist in chilled ready to eat seafood products based in Scotland. In July 2007 it also acquired the Seafood Company - comprised of Anchor Seafoods and the Cromer Crab Company.

By the end of 2007 the Young’s business was firmly established as one of Europe’s most important specialist fish companies, with around 5000 employees and 11 sites across the UK. In January 2008, a restructuring saw Young’s reorganized as part of the Foodvest Group. Formerly the holding company for Young’s in the UK and Findus in Scandinavia and France, Foodvest is now the parent company for these businesses, making it one of Europe’s leading fish and frozen food companies, with a turnover in excess of £1BN.

In the UK, the restructure means that the former Young’s business is now comprised of two specialist seafood companies: Young’s itself as the UK’s leading seafood brand, and The Seafood Company, focused on chilled products for retailer own label.

Now as a purely branded business, Young’s continues to build on its 200 year heritage to produce a wide variety of frozen and chilled seafood - everything from delicious natural fillets and battered fish to innovative recipe meals and specialist seafood such as prawns and smoked salmon.

Elizabeth Young would be proud of the company that still bears her name!
